About the Author
Allen Giese is the founder of Northstar Financial Planners, a fiduciary fee-only financial planning firm in South Florida that prides itself on helping clients achieve what is most important to them. Allen is the father of an adult son who was diagnosed with schizophrenia in his late teens, and, with his wife, Gayle, is deeply involved in mental health advocacy. Together, they founded Ride to Awareness; in 2015 Allen and his team rode 3,000 miles, crossing the USA on bicycles promoting mental illness awareness and fighting the stigma attached to it. Both Allen and Gayle work closely with their local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Allen speaks frequently on the unique challenges of special needs and mental health financial planning.

This is a great resource.Allen has taken his family's struggle with mental illness and turned it into a road map for anyone with a similar, unforeseeable life-changing experience. A sick child of any age takes a heavy emotional toll on parents. Allen has used his expertise in long-range finances to develop a workable plan to prevent other families from being bankrupted.Honest and candid in his story, the book describes the heartbreak and frustration of a parent trying to help a sick child, something every parent can relate to.
Allen Giese's book is a one-of-a-kind, well-written guide for families who are struggling with how to protect and plan for the future of a loved one that is financially dependent on them. This book sheds light on a difficult subject in a positive encouraging way. I learned a lot (and I’m a financial advisor like the author).
Allen Giese poured out his heart and wrote the story of his son's dissent into psychosis and ending in his diagnosis of a very serious long term mental illness. He prepares the family for how to cope with the huge expenses of the illness and how to set up a long term financial plan to pay for the costly services and long term residential programs. He also tells you how to get educated and learn the right questions to ask mental health providers. He tells you how to set up an ABLE account which many families have never heard of and don't understand the importance of how it is different from a Special Needs trust. A really excellent book I am recommending to every family I come in contact with that is trying to cope with an adult child with serious mental illness and know the importance of long term planning that will help their adult child after they pass away.
