About the Author

Louisa Cook Moats, Ed.D., has published many book chapters, journal articles, and policy papers on reading instruction. These materials are now required content in all of the professional development programs conducted under Assembly Bill 1086 in California. Dr. Moats received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley College, her Master of Arts degree from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, and her doctorate of education in reading and human development from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She worked as a teacher, neuropsychology technician, and specialist in learning disorders prior to her doctoral training. She was a licensed psychologist in private practice for 15 years in Vermont and a graduate instructor both at Harvard and at St. Michael's College in Winooski, Vermont, where she developed innovative courses for teachers linking the disciplines of linguistics and reading education. Specializing in reading development, reading disorders, spelling, and written language, she has written and lectured widely throughout the United States and abroad. She has taught courses in teacher education at the Greenwood Institute in Putney, Vermont, and at Simmons College in Boston. This book might be good for people who have trained in linguistics but it was used in a college "phonics" course and I, who was a teacher and studied and practiced phonics was not familiar with the linguistics, or the technical language. Also, in this day of youtube, the descriptions of how particular sounds should be made, written in the text, were practically incomprehensible and should be supported by videos with audio, not a ridiculously clinical description of the way the tongue, teeth, breath, etc. are implemented in the making of certain sounds. Maybe a linguist would find it useful, but it was not useful to me, and I had to search youtube to find my own video/audio examples to comprehend the author's descriptions. Very pedantic writing style, nothing inspiring about it at all.

I needed this book for a graduate course. It has some great information on language acquisition and linguistics. Not a particularly thrilling read, but it is full of content.

Definitely helpful with re-learning/just learning a lot of the concepts. Plus, the information is presented simply, with lots of explanation, and a helpful workbook (if purchased SEPERATE).

This book is AMAZING for any educator interested in learning the things all preservice teachers should be being taught. As a teacher I use this book quite regularly to enhance my instructional techniques. This text is not one to be read and put in a shelf, it is one that good teachers can refer back to as they encounter difficulties or wish to enhance areas of their teaching.

Very resourceful for all staff working with students at any level.

This book is a great resource for understanding how the English language works. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to learn more about English and the reading process. It is not a book that you would just pick up and read for fun, but if you are interested in learning about the English language as it relates to reading I would recommend this book.

Great price

The book "Speech to Print" was an excellent review of phonology for me and gave me a better understanding of orthography. The chapter on morphology shed light on the struggles that my daughter is experiencing and will surely help me become a better therapist as well. Exercises throughout and at the end of chapters allowed for practice and checked for mastery, which is not only important for students but essential for those of us teaching the material as well.
