Once again a spellbinding story I could not put down. The charecters were well developed and drew me in from the very first chapter. Claire this was such a great story, I felt every word.
This is an excellent book! If you enjoy the thriller/mystery genres then you should definitely add this to your to-be-read list. You will be happy you did.
I am astounded with the fact that this is only the first time Claire Highton-Stevenson’s is dabbling with Murder Mystery’s. She writes as if this has been something she’s been doing all along.Like many books in this genre, “The Doll Maker†began with a description of the killer at work, describing his feeling during his very first kill. What was refreshing was that the author gave us just enough of a taste in the first chapter to entice readers to keep turning pages. The book has a good, even flow to it, the action proceeding at a steady pace. I don't often call a book a page-turner; I feel that's so overused and, to be frank, rarely accurate. THIS book, though, is a legitimate page-turner. I read it straight through in pretty much one sitting. The main characters, Sophie, Rachel and of course the killer, are believably flawed, and Well written threw out. The killer is suitably awful. And the addition of the tie back to Rachel past was wonderfully handle This is a story that you can sink your teeth into, and I never got the feeling that the author would let me down by introducing one cryptic twist after another. Literally to the end of the book.Overall, an entertaining read, and definitely a positive start to hopefully a DI Sophie Whitton series. Five stars!
This is romance writer Claire Highton-Stevenson's first mystery book, but from the way the plot unfolds, you would think she had been writing these for years! The plot is creepy, twisted, unsettling, and complex. Parts will gross you out, but still keep you turning the pages to find what it all means. I was guessing right up until the end!The heroine, DI Sophie Whitton, is surly and sexy, and she's not someone you can count on to always do the right thing in her personal life. Sometimes, she screws up, and you want to shake her! But when it comes to seeking justice, she's unwavering. And yes, there is some romance! I won't give away too much about that, but you do get to see some interesting developments in Sophie's love life. The plots stays mostly focused on the gritty murder mystery though, so if that's what you're after, you won't be disappointed!
Being a huge fan of this genre, especially when it's dark and psychological, PLUS with a cover like THIS one...very hard to keep me away. So I read it. In one single sitting.Initially, I assumed the perp was just like any other serial killer committing a crime that I've read before. Then the murder scenes were reminiscent of Jack the Ripper's. My intrigue piqued even more. But then Highton-Stevenson turned this theme on its head with a refreshingly intriguing modus operandi which I totally was caught off-guard and simply loved the surprise! Frankly, having read so many dark crimes and thrillers, very rarely would I be surprised. Well done, Highton-Stevenson! I'm officially impressed! Now, let it be known that this is in no way a "romance" thriller. For me, this book is just like any other mainstream crime thriller, e.g. McDermid or Cornwell's. Having said that, though, Whitton's private life was portrayed albeit in the background. Anyway, in Whitton's case, the dedication to her work became her shield and an escapade as problems on the home front deteriorated more as this particularly puzzling case of finding the serial killer who left dolls beside their victims took all of her time and energy spent at work. I loved how Highton-Stevenson depicted a troubled relationship with a subtlety that conveyed the nuances of all the non-verbals, body language and mood between two people who'd been together long enough to know the changes and differences around them.As much as I felt a sense of unease and discomfort whilst reading about their relationship woes, at the same time, I recognised that the feelings generated played perfectly well to the cloud of unease and discontent that were lurking in the dark shadows of this serial killing case. As Highton-Stevenson's direction steered back and forth between the increasing strain in Whitton's withering relationship and mounting tension in the case as the body count rose and more puzzling discoveries made, me mind drew parallels between these two events happening in conjunction with each other. Somehow I got the sense that the psychological implications of Whitton's increasingly complex serial case that seemed to get away from her grasp were a metaphor to the spiralling chaos in her love life that she was slowly but surely losing control of. Or maybe it's just me! Regardless, I loved that intertwining symbiosis created as it gave the story more depth and a sense of relativity between both worlds in Whitton's life - as a lover/partner and a copper.I can't reveal the inner workings of how Whitton's love life fared along the journey in this story without giving it away but I can say one thing: Although I was initially weary about how Highton-Stevenson would tackle Whitton's relationship troubles, I was pleasantly surprised with me own reaction to the outcome because of obvious reasons but Highton-Stevenson's way of weaving the circumstances surrounding the affected parties into a realistic state of affairs, their mindsets at the crossroads, which tied in perfectly to their characters, was utterly authentic, natural and the cause and effect flowed organically. I actually ended up rooting for the paradigm shift! It signified Whitton's growth as to how she perceived what love and relationship meant for her in her life in the long run. All the feelings and emotions that she held back for one reason or another (which you'll understand when you read the book), were finally unshackled as she slowly began to understand and come to terms with facing the truth about love openly without guilt. I LOVED the development that involved the "source" of Whitton's change. On that note, I'll stop right here because any further elaboration would become a potential spoiler! But I think, if you're like me, you'll prolly end up having your perspective changed as you go down the path that Highton-Stevenson had so deftly constructed in how she depicted the entire situation, which I thought was written with a deep understanding, sensitivity and empathy of how love and relationships could sometimes be: messy, chaotic and positively complicated, especially when open and honest communication is absent.Due to the nature of this case, I can't divulge anything else related to Whitton and Co.'s investigation and discoveries or there'd be spoilers. But I would say this - Highton-Stevenson's crafted twists about the nature of the case, especially the genesis and reasons behind the crime, specifically the perp's modus operandi (M.O.), were original, very creative and I must say, I never came across any similarities close to this M.O. from other crime stories that I'd read with similar nature of the crime. So, top marks, Highton-Stevenson! I absolutely LOVED being surprised and the result turning out much higher than me expectations (which I must say, in this genre, is always very high, mind!). The other twist, well...I did have me suspicions but it was obviously very different as Highton-Stevenson slowly pulled the wool over our eyes with layer after layer of revelation. You need to read it from the start to be able to grasp the ramifications of this, the feeling of "Crikey!" just like Whitton did! That feeling of tension and stress when everything starts to snowball? Yup, that happened and it was glorious!Usually, epilogues provide a sense of closure, generating a positive vibe to the story, don't they? Well... THIS epilogue though... OMG. I literally stopped breathing as I raced to find out what happened! You know when you're so eager and desperate to know the outcome that you just skim through the words and then stop when you think you read something that just screws up your thoughts that the only way out of it is to go back and re-read those words? Yup, that's pretty much what happened to me. Jesus Christ! Well played! All in all, I absolutely loved and enjoyed this dark thrilling ride with a refreshing take on the nature of the crime. I'm grateful that the author didn't resort to the graphic nature of the violent crimes, however gruesome they were, especially when it came to women. She handled it tastefully. And I was glad she didn't resort to just using women as mere tools of exploitative victimisation to create the feel of gruesomeness and violence to depict a murder, like many other writers of this genre do these days. I loved how compelling the case was and how the investigation was handled even in the midst of Whitton's personal troubles and dilemma. I absolutely loved the secondary characters, one in particular. Also, Whitton's partner-in-crime, along with his family, were delightful to get to know more of! The camaraderie of the group was well developed and I could see how Highton-Stevenson could expand it if this becomes a series which I absolutely would follow especially with the potential further development of a certain character besides Whitton that would hopefully mesh perfectly with the very nature of the potential series (crimes/investigations/cases).Yes, I HIGHLY recommend this must-read book especially if you're a fan of the crime/thriller/mystery genre.
Well, I certainly was entertained by the plot. While I was able to predict some things, I was never entirely certain until all was revealed.Sophie is a detective who is trying to bring down a serial killer who leaves dolls as a calling card. So many avenues are explored and ruled out as we slowly progress through the story. On a personal level, Sophie isn't satisfied. She is in a relationship where they are going through the motions because it's easier than ending things.Winter has arrived and all aspects of life are providing challenges for her.Rachel, a theatre nurse who isn't shy about what she wants could be a nice distraction for the detective or a really bad idea.I thought this was a creative storyline. Some subject matter was a little intense. I didn't think it was entirely gruesome considering the theme of the book.My only issue with this one was how things start between Sophie and Rachel. And also the flippant attitude of Rachel. This was a good read and I recommend for anyone who enjoys crime, killers, mystery, and suspense.
