Review

“The God We Never Knew will appeal to unbelieving seekers and fainthearted believers, but it also has riches for those who think their faith is secure.” (Robert N. Bellah, author of Habits of the Heart)“Writing clearly, summarizing some of the best contemporary theology in non-technical language, Borg continues to speak to, and to challenge, the widest possible audience.” (Publishers Weekly)“Borg does what few scholars on religion seem capable of doing: he has digested an immense amount of difficult, often conflicting religious ideas and written a clear, coherent, and highly readable theological work that satisfies the mind and the soul.” (Oregonian)“In this trenchant theological work, Borg challenges us to re-imagine God, spiritual practice, justice, and salvation. It is a subtle, flexible, intelligent, and mature reframing of Christianity for this age of heated-up religious pluralism.” (Spirituality & Practice)“A breath of fresh air, a liberating book for Jews and Christians alike.” (Harold Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People)“[P]ersuasive and inspiriting.” (Frederick Buechner)

From the Inside Flap

Answering the vital contemporary theological and spiritual questions that fall outside the scope of such popular historical bestsellers such as A History of God and God: A Biography, Marcus Borg leads us to a fresh, contemporary, yet deeply grounded experience of God in our minds--and hearts. "For me, the problem was thus centrally intellectual, even though it deeply affected the rest of my life. For a variety of good reasons, not everybody experiences a serious intellectual problem with the notion of God. But some do. For my own religious journey, the resolution of the intellectual problem was indispensable; without it, I would still be on the outside of the Christian life looking in."--from The God We Never Knew How to have faith--even to think about God--without having to stifle modern rational thought is one of the most vital challenges facing many of us today. Marcus Borg, author of the bestselling Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, traces his personal spiritual journey to the discovery of an authentic yet fully contemporary understanding of God. In a compelling, readable way, he leads us from the distant, authoritarian God of our childhood to an equally powerful, dynamic adult image of God--"the beyond in our midst," the life spirit that is within us and all around us--that reconciles faith with science, history, critical thinking, and religious pluralism.

I've read two other books by Borg and this one was the most confusing of the three to comprehend. He uses a lot of long words that I am unfamiliar with. Though he explained them it got a bit overwhelming.Otherwise, it is a fine book. He went thru the same doubts as most of us yet arrives at mature, rational conclusions. He broadens ones perspective, accepts ones misgivings, allows the reader to draw their own conclusions, rather than imply that this is THE only way to find God.I would recommend it to both devoted Christians and puzzled seekers.

Borg is a consummate Biblical scholar, but since he taught mainly on the West Coast in a secular university where the students were largely biblically illiterate, he has a great gift of being able to break it down in language that is clear enough for the ordinary reader, yet is intellectually challenging enough for me who has been a Lutheran pastor for 56 years. --Sam Jackson P.S. The only reason I did not comment on a couple of other of Borg's books I recently purchased is that I haven't read them yet. I can say I haven't read anything he has written that I did not like very much.

This book by Marcus Borg lived up to its title in identifying a God that I did not know while growing up in the Catholic church in the 70s. My image of God was much like what Borg had experienced as a child: a God who was "out there" or "up there" and who was more of a judgemental or punitive God than a loving God that yearns to be in a relationship with us. I especially liked how Borg defined Christianity as being in a relationship with God as known in Jesus Christ. Its not about "believing" or saying you believe in Jesus for the sake of going to heaven. It was great to read how the prophets in the Hebrew Bible did not even talk about the after-life or heaven until the book of Daniel and how it was not a primary concern of Jesus. Salvation means being saved from an old or dead way of living so that we can make the most out of this life through our relationship with God.I have also read Borg's "The Heart of Christianity" which I really love and recommend. There is some overlap with this book. The reason I did not give this book a five star rating is related to the chapter on God's dream or social vision. In this chapter, Borg is quite critical of the American economic system and its focus on the individual. He is correct in writing about the widening gap between the upper and lower income levels in the U.S. That's ok but I wish he would have mentioned that American capitalism (i.e. the profit motive, incentives) has provided the wealth and opportunity to spend more money on charities and religious mission than any country in the world. This fact should have been recognized. Borg does not come out and mention any of the isms (e.g. capitalism, socialism, communism). However, the egalitarian (his description not mine) social system he advocates sounds like communism and this (as we all know) has been a complete failure. He should have noted that the U.S. is the most God believing and church going country in the industrial world while communist and socialist countries have little if any focus on God. To be fair, Borg does mention that he is a realist and does not expect this egalatarian society to exist any time in the near future, if at all.In summary, this book was very insightful and practical. I am grateful to Marcus Borg for openning my mind. He has indeed stregthened my faith in God and Christianity. I look forward to reading more of his ideas.

Marcus Borg at his best for study and discussion groups who are Jesus followers and seekers of a more spiritual path in life. Borg offers freedom to those trapped in dogma and tradition, a freedom to rejoice in the beauty and wonder of the nature of God and a freedom to enter into a deepr relationship with "I am who am."

Every Christian should read this text. Borg lives the questions and then explains them in wonderfully clear images. He is a thinking persons theologian. As one who grew up in the church, have served as a pastor, chaplain, mentor of scores of young prospective ministers, I discovered Marcus Borg late in my ministry and found a compatriot who articulated in multiple ways the journey I have walked for decades. I consider Borg to be an essential resource for faith development as one moves from early faith formation toward maturity.

This book offers a "thinking person's Christianity" including a well-thought out and dynamic view of God. A view which transcends rigid, traditional ideas of the great monarch in the sky, and offers instead a warm presence which participates in and supports our lives in a meaningful way.Further gives a good analysis of the nature of Jesus Christ both as an historical individual and in his relationship with the divine.Terrific book. Not just for Christians, but for all those interested in the spiritual life.

Marcus Borg provides a fresh perspective, and a challenging look at faith and our pre-conceptions about God and the message of the Bible. Whether you agree with him or not, this book (as well as many of his others - individually and with John Dominic Crossan) will push you to think hard about things you may have taken for granted.

For anyone serious about understanding the gospel and this spiritual journey we are on, Marcus Borg is a must read. Read his entire library!
