A curse on you, Lexi Blake! You wrecked me! You broke my heart and made me glad I finished reading this at two in the morning, because my SO makes fun of me, when I cry over fictional characters. The good: Sex scenes: hawt, hawt, hawt! Character development: Great, as always, except Merlin (more on that later). The plot: intriguing and entertaining. Action: fantastic. Sex: hawt, hawt, hawt! (Did I all ready say that? Well, it bears repeating). The bad: Zoey continues to make some stupid decisions, but she redeems herself with her thievery skills. Zoey is sexually and emotionally abused, yet suffers no mental anguish or backlash. The character of Merlin: He's good! He's bad! He's a manipulator! He's helpful! He's trying to tear Dan away from Dev and Zoey! He leaves! It's like the author had something else planned for Merlin, and then just changed her mind. The whole section involving Merlin was almost superfluous, except for one major plot development, which could have been handled a different way. It's still well-written, and I still love the series and Lexi Blake, but that felt like a misstep in an otherwise tight and well-written series. The final bad: IT ENDED!!!! There was still so much I wanted to know, and I wasn't ready to let these characters go. Reading an excerpt of another series by this author, it appears that some of the characters are, at least, marginally referenced in that series, so I might try those other books and see if I can find out answers to some of my questions like ***MINOR SPOILER*** what happens to Summer? What do Lee and Rhys grow up to be like? Does Zoey really settle down and give of thieving? It was a good ending to the series. I just felt like Lexi Blake could have gone on with three more books, at least, and kept my interest. And I guess, that's the highest praise I can give to any book. I wanted it to never end.
Very brief synopsis - We are at the end game, and all of the players are in position. There is laughter and extreme joy, which slides into horror and the agony of loss. There is no way, really, to summarize Steal the Night without giving too much away, and I do not want to spoil this extraordinary story for anyone. What worked for me - Ms. Blake has incorporated my all time, very favorite mythology into this series, with her own spin. That part of the story ended abruptly. I feel like that plotline will be revisited in the spin off series.Throughout the series, we have watched Dev, Daniel and Zoey learn to work together, and they really function as a team in StN. The trio has cemented their bond to each other, and it is a beautiful thing to see.The story grabs ahold and continues to escalate until this reader had to set her ereader down to take a deep breath, or several. We get extreme highs and devastating lows. What I am still having a hard time processing-***Potential Spoilers- If you are good at reading between the lines and don't want to be spoiled, consider yourself warned -*** Zoey is in a very dangerous situation. Dev and Daniel know where she is. She has a specific task that she needs to accomplish, but even after she has the tools she needs, she allows herself to remain in dire circumstances. I get that Daniel needed time to heal and gather forces. I understand doing what you need to do to survive, and good for Zoey for that. But it strikes me as so out of character for her to stay when she could have escaped, and most importantly, for Daniel and Dev to allow her to remain in such a horrific state...It made more sense as I was reading, but 2 days later, it's not correlating with what I know about these characters. The whole episode, which takes up about the last third of the book, squicked me out, and made me heartsick, honestly.Bottom line - This is a great series. Don't try to start with Steal the Night because it is not meant to be a standalone. Books 3 and 4 remain my favorites. Steal the Night was really hard for me to read in some places, and reminded me why Urban Fantasy really doesn't work for me, as a genre. If Ms. Blake wasn't driving this particular bus, I probably would have given up after book 2. That said, I am glad I didn't give up. I will be on board for the next run in this world. Time and money extremely well spent.
