The Sea Before Us is a fantastic start to the Sunrise at Normandy series! This novel is based on the lives of American naval officer Lt. Wyatt Paxton and Dorothy Fairfax, a “Wren” in the Women’s Royal Naval Service. They are both part of the group working behind the scenes to prepare for the Allied invasion of France. They are both broken souls because of their pasts. They become friends through their mutual work on the maps. Sundin is describes in great detail all the work involved in helping create accurate maps of Normandy. All details are important! Any slight change in topography could mean an enemy encampment. The stakes are life and death. Yet, some people choose to use these darkest of days to attempt to further their own careers while placing the lives of countless others at risk.Sundin has done a masterful job in capturing the feeling of what it must have been like to be living in London and helping the troops prepare for the Allied invasion. Her characters are strong, relatable and believable. Her descriptions of mapmaking are detailed, interesting and informative. The plot is thrilling - not just building up to D-Day, but another huge mystery involving Dorothy’s family, as well. Excellent book from start to finish! I was provided an ARC of this book by Revell & NetGalley. All opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.

My Impressions:My book club gives its unanimous approval to The Sea Before Us by Sarah Sundin. This WWII-era romance has everything we look for in a book — great relatable characters, realistic story line, and a setting that captures our imagination. We also had plenty to talk about! Most of us didn’t know much about the planning of the D-Day invasion or the sea support of the campaign, and this novel was a wonderful glimpse into the strategy and sheer determination of the participants. This one is a recommended read from By The Book. The Sea Before Us is set in the months leading up to the D-Day invasion. Main characters Dorothy, a WREN, and Wyatt, a US Naval officer, are both involved in the planning stages. I loved the detail Sundin shares in the meticulous mapping of the Normandy coast in a time way before Google Earth. In addition, the complexity of the naval operation is told in a way even those with no military background can understand. But this novel also gives a glimpse into the wartime psyche of the people of England. The famous stiff upper lip hid a multitude of fears but served as a means for civilians and military alike to defeat the evil that took over Europe. Dorothy and Wyatt, both dedicated to their jobs, were influenced by their past mistakes and sense of unworthiness. While it helped get the job done, both needed to put aside failures and rejections in order to discover their worth in God’s eyes. This aspect of the novel made both characters realistic. As for the romance, sparks ignite for the Texas cowboy and the vivacious red-headed English girl. For Dorothy a family secret is revealed, but Wyatt’s family issues remain — the story will continue in the next two books. We all loved The Sea Before Us, but are not satisfied that we will have to wait so long for the next two books! But we are definitely putting them on our 2019 and 2020 reading list.Recommended.Book Club Approved.Audience: adults.

The Sea Before Us by Sarah Sundin captivates the reader from the first pages. This story just gets better and better the deeper the reader goes. The characters breathe with life. Vivid images explode in the reader's imagination. Bombs whine. Acrid sulfur scents the air. The reader is there in the midst of the fray. Tension mounts. This reader flipped pages at an alarming rate eagerly seeking resolution to the hero and heroine's dilemmas. All the while the war lurks threateningly and choices will determine their future. What an excellent war story this is! While there are a couple of romantic threads, there's a whole lot more to this book than the usual boy meets and pines for the girl of his dreams. The angst of war and the character's good sense prevent anything steamy from happening. This book was so good that this reviewer wants to read more from Sarah Sundin's keyboard. Well done, Sarah!

Sarah Sundin brings us her newest series from WWII, Sunrise at Normandy. Book one is The Sea Before Us which brings us Wyatt Paxton, U.S. Navy, from Texas and Dorothy Fairfax, a British WREN (Women’s Royal Naval Service). Learn how military reconnaissance was done before satellites and computer-generated information was available. I found it fascinating that they put out pleas for family photos of specific geographic locations, from different angles, so they could put them together to compare to new photos taken and see what the enemy might have added or removed to make a position better militarily. Each character has their own responsibilities in this military intelligence operation, and each character brings their own troubles and nightmares with them from home. But, both characters prove their resilience and tenacity as they put their personal demons aside to help the war effort. Wartime is always a life-changing experience, regardless of how and where it is fought. People learn they are stronger than they thought possible and can survive just about anything with God’s help. This series tells the story of 3 brothers, Wyatt, Adler, and Clay Paxton as they meet their greatest challenges in the midst of a world war. Buy this first book and take the journey with them. Sarah Sundin tells stories that are realistic and engaging as a result of her personal history and a great deal of research and travel. Her characters are as real as fiction can get and her stories hold you captive until the end of the series. She’s one of the few authors that I’ll pre-order a book. I can’t wait until the next book is released.
